The goal of the author is to make history interesting so that people who have dosed off in history class can get interested again. I read a couple of Davis' Don't Know Much About... books years ago and really enjoyed them, so I thought this one would be fun.

First off who was around to tell Washington chop down the tree, how did we know it was a cherry tree. Dick Estell read it far better - he thought about what he read, he "lived" it, whereas Arthur Morey's reading is superficial (is that the right word? This is one of the best series of books that I own; and now on DVDs to listen to while driving.

His strong liberal leanings manifested itself towards the end, starting with the 1960s to present, so take it with a grain of salt. I did learn a few things that I hadn't learned or failed to retain. I had the unabridged 1990/1995-version on compact cassettes (heard it through >10 times from beginning to end) and bought this for an update. This is a marvelous book and I highly recommend it!

School text books very often describe the fabricated history ( especially regarding wars ) to convince the people for jusification of the government's wrong decision and we tend to have biased vision about it, however, we ourselves should always try to have another view point in order to verify the truth with more flexible mental atrtitude. Passages from historical texts provide a counterpoint, anchoring Davis's answers within historical periods and letting listeners hear bits of period perspective. Being American, and all, I know I'm not very cognizant of my country's past.

A quick history review from the start of America up to Sep 11th. Also, I have a pretty long commute so I decided to get this audio version (it's about 20 CDS long).

This book is meant for middle school aged children but the history stops around 9/11 which is about the time most kids reading this today were born. Own it. It was alright but nothing exceptional. I did learn some things. I really have a bad memory and loved this book so I bought it. abridged version too short --- but still excellent. It was also cool how it was formatted in questions. It nonetheless is, including this fault, a fantastic reading of a very good history book that is very easy to listen to - and I am not really a history fan. Not bad! Some content gets repeated (especially in the timelines of wars, etc) and some sections are oddly short (for instance, the Tonkin Incident section doesn't actually describe what happened, although it was later discussed in a timeline), but those aren't major issues.
